Armedus opened his eyes and found himself standing at the edge of the forest again, the gravel path stretching before him. The air was crisp, and the oppressive whispers were gone. In his hand, the silver band gleamed faintly, its carvings now etched into his memory.

Ahead, the cabin stood once more, but it was no longer decayed and lifeless. The windows glowed warmly, and smoke curled from the chimney. Armedus felt a pull toward it, an invisible thread guiding him forward.

This time, the gate swung open without resistance, and the cabin door creaked as he pushed it. Inside, the scent of vanilla was overwhelming but comforting. The room was just as he remembered it—dusty, filled with webs—but in the center stood Ellie Ann, her blue dress flowing as if caught in an unseen breeze.

“You came back,” she said softly, her voice filled with relief.

“I don’t understand,” Armedus said, his voice trembling. “What happened to us?”

“You forgot,” Ellie Ann said, stepping closer. “The forest took you, Garrett. It twists time, bends reality. You lost yourself, but you found me again.”

“My name—” he started, but she placed a finger to his lips.

“It doesn’t matter anymore,” she whispered. “What matters is the promise. We finish this together.”

She took his hand and guided him toward the fireplace, where a small, unlit candle sat. As they approached, the silver band in his hand glowed brighter, its light filling the room.

“Light it,” Ellie Ann said, her eyes locked on his.

Armedus hesitated, then placed the silver band over the candle. A flame erupted, small but steady, and the warmth spread through the cabin. The walls shimmered, the dust and debris fading away as the room transformed into something vibrant, alive.

Ellie Ann smiled, her form growing fainter. “You’ve freed us, Garrett. The forest will remember, but it won’t take you again.”

“Wait!” Armedus reached out, but she was already fading, her green eyes the last to disappear.

The cabin was empty now, but it no longer felt abandoned. The weight in his chest lifted, and as he stepped outside, the forest seemed brighter, less menacing.

Armedus looked back one last time. The cabin stood tall and whole, a reminder of what had been lost and reclaimed.

He turned and walked down the path, the silver band now cool in his pocket. The whispers were gone, replaced by the soft rustling of leaves. He didn’t know what lay ahead, but for the first time, he felt certain he could face it.

The forest had taken much from him, but it had also given something back: the strength to carry on and the promise of a new beginning.
